95% chance LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony to play for the Knicks in 2015-2016 says Stephen A. Smith

Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James could be playing for the Knicks in 2015-2016

Stephen A. Smith is never short on wild predictions, but this newest bold proclamation could come true. The Knicks added a ton of respectability with the hiring of team president Phil Jackson along with newly appointed coach Derek Fisher. This alone could attract free agents with the clout the two have earned over the years. But would this be enough to convince star forward Carmelo Anthony to opt in for one more year instead of hit the free agency market? In addition, if LeBron James and company decided to opt in for their last year in Miami, this could set the stage for a dramatic summer of 2015.

Smith said on his radio show Wednesday on ESPN New York 98.7 FM’s “The Stephen A. Smith and Ryan Ruocco Show” that Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James would like to play together and it’s a “95 percent possibility” that James and Anthony would end up together if both opted in to their contracts for the 2014-15 season.

“LeBron wants to play with Melo,” Smith said. “Melo wants to play with LeBron.”

Smith said that if both James and Anthony opt in this summer, “the New York Knicks would have a shot at getting LeBron James to come to New York.”

The Knicks are projected to have enough cap space to land two max free agents in summer 2015.

“I’m here to tell you right now it’s a 95 percent possibility — if not more — that they would join forces whether it be in New York or Miami,” he said.

While LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have been rumored to want to play together before, this would take incredible circumstances to pull off. First, Melo has stated he will test the free agency market this year and even if he decided to opt in one more year, the Knicks would need LeBron to opt in one more year as well.

On top of that, would LeBron really leave the Miami Heat and his buddy Dwyane Wade to rebuild the culture of a New York team that hasn’t won a championship in over 40 years? Lastly, the Knicks probably wouldn’t have room to add a third wheel unless they could make a couple of trades. July will be a very important month for the foreseeable future for the Knicks franchise.
