Blues’ Jaden Schwartz to switch number to honor late sister
When the St. Louis Blues take the ice for the 2014-15 season, one player will be looking a bit different.
That player is left winger Jaden Schwartz who has chosen to switch from his previous number 9 jersey to the recently vacated number 17. Vladimir Sobotka was the previous holder of the number 17 and he left for the KHL.
The reason Schwartz will switch numbers is because the number 17 jersey was the one worn by his late sister.
Mandi Schwartz wore the number 17 while playing hockey for Yale University. She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2007 and was seeking a bone marrow transplant when Jaden was drafted by the St. Louis Blues with the 14th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
Mandi passed away in April 2011, aged just 23.

It’s a nice way to honor his older sister and keep her memory alive.
