Claude Giroux, star forward for the Philadelphia Flyers and the leading scorer in this year’s NHL playoffs, has been suspended one game for hitting New Jersey Devils forward Dainius Zubrus in the head. The incident occurred during last night’s Game 4 of the Flyers/Devils Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series. Giroux was given an illegal check to the head penalty during the game for the hit. The NHL has been trying to crack down recently on hits the head, as they can cause severe injuries like concussions. Earlier in the NHL postseason, New York Rangers forward Carl Hagelin was suspended three games for hitting Ottawa Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson in the head, and Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom earned a one-game suspension for cross-checking Boston Bruins forward Rich Peverley in the face.

Philadelphia, already down 3-1 in the series to New Jersey after the Devils’ 4-2 win last night, now face an even steeper uphill climb without Giroux, their top offensive player.

Below is the footage of Giroux’s hit on Zubrus.
