According the Colorado Avalanche’s official website, they have chosen a new captain. The honor has been bestowed upon 19-year, 286-day old Gabriel Landeskog, last year’s Calder Trophy winner as NHL Rookie of the Year.

Landeskog is not only the youngest captain in team history, but the youngest captain in NHL history. Colorado selected the Swedish left winger with the second overall selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He repaid their investment by leading the team in goals, plus/minus rating, and tying for the team lead in game-winning goals en route to winning the aforementioned Calder Trophy last year.

The Avalanche, who have existed since 1995 after moving from Quebec to Colorado while changing their name from the Nordiques, have only had four captains in team history. Joe Sakic wore the “C” from 1995 to 2009, Adam Foote captained them from 2009-2011, and this past season Milan Hejduk led the team. And now, Gabriel Landeskog will have the honor of being captain of the Colorado Avalanche for the foreseeable future.
