GIF: Slovakian goalie makes best hit of the Olympics
T.J. Oshie gained national recognition as the hero of USA’s big victory over host Russia on Saturday. However, Sunday was a new day, and it brought us a new favorite hockey player in the Olympics: Slovakia’s third goaltender, Jan Laco.
The 32-year-old Laco received the start against Russia over two NHL goaltenders, Jaroslav Halak and Peter Budaj, who had both struggled in their past appearances in Sochi. But Laco stole the show as Slovakia fought to get their first win of the tournament. While Laco could not deny either Alexander Radulov or Ilya Kovalchuk in the shootout, he turned away every single Russian shot in the game’s 65 minutes of regulation and overtime.
Laco also made highlights with a wonderful hit on Russia’s Alexey Tereschenko, who was attempting to play the puck behind the net. Simply put, goalie got back! Check out the GIF courtesy of @myregularface:
Not surpringly, the 5’11”, 183-pound Laco was issued an interference penalty at the 6:54 mark of the second period for this hit. However, no penalty can minimize how awesome this hit was.
