Johnny Boychuk released from hospital, will join Bruins

  • Joe Ray

The NHL is taking extra measures this season to insure that their players are as safe as possible in game situations. From time to time, however, ugly-looking hits can’t be avoided. Such was the case with Boston’s Johnny Boychuk in last night’s game against Montreal.

Boychuk went into the corner to play a puck four and a half minutes into the game between the Bruins and Canadiens. Montreal’s Max Pacioretty hit Boychuk playing the puck, and as Boychuk went to the ice it appeared that his chest hit the boards at an awkward angle. Boychuk had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher, and was taken to a local hospital in Montreal. Here’s the video of the hit for those that have not seen it:

On a somewhat ironic note, Pacioretty ended up scoring the game winning goal with 2:18 to play in the second period to give Montreal a 2-1 lead that would prove to be the final score. The goal was Pacioretty’s ninth in his last nine games, but the injury really overshadowed his performance. From the Associated Press:

“It wasn’t really a strong game for me,” he said. “I got the life sucked out of me when that injury happened. I just felt awful.

“I felt terrible about it because I didn’t really know what happened. I was just battling for the puck. I’ve been in that situation before. I had no intent to injure anybody.”

According to ESPNBoston’s Joey McDonald, Boychuk was later released from the hospital and was cleared to travel with the team. Bruins head coach Claude Julien did not disclose the injury that Boychuk suffered on the play, but said that he thought the referees made the right call on Pacioretty, a two-minute boarding call.

After a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, the Bruins head out on a four-game road trip across Canada, playing in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver over a seven-day stretch.
