Lightning, Panthers to play for “Governor’s Cup”
In an effort to spice up the in-state rivalry (“rivalry”) between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, the winner of the four-game regular season series between the two teams will be awarded the Governor’s Cup. More specifically, whichever team earns more total points in the four games (two points for a win, one point for a shootout/overtime loss, zero for a regulation loss) will win the Cup.
We’re sure the Panthers’ legions of fans will be thrilled.
All kidding aside, this is actually not a bad move. The NHL often does suffer from a lack of attention, most notably in the southern United States, and this should add some bragging rights, or at the very least a yearly point of interest for both teams from the Sunshine State.
