Maple Leafs acquire Roman Polak from Blues, send Carl Gunnarsson
The second day of the 2014 NHL Draft is well underway and while the attention is on the prospects, teams are still finding time to wheel and deal their established players.
That was the case in Toronto as the Maple Leafs traded defenseman Carl Gunnarrson to the St. Louis Blues. In return, the Blues sent another defeneman in the shape of Roman Polak. The Maple Leafs also sent a fourth-round pick.
Polak will add a level of ruggedness that the Maple Leafs lacked. With St. Louis last season, Polak lead the team in hits wit 151 while only averaging 17 minutes a game. Gunnarsson averaged more playing time and was a staple of the defense in Toronto.
So why the trade? Apparently Gunnarsson had some major hip surgery which could have factored into the trade.
Gunnarsson just had pretty significant hip surgery. Another factor in deal.
