New Dallas Stars logo leaked

  • Arun Morace

As had long been rumored, the Dallas Stars confirmed on May 21 that they would indeed be unveiling a new logo and jersey for the 2013-14 season, promising a reveal on June 4. But of course, in the age of the internet, nothing is safe. Images of the new logo were leaked through various sources, and confirmed by SportsLogos.net.

Check them out for yourselves:

The new logo, and yet-to-be revealed jerseys that go along with them, are part of a rebranding effort under new Stars owner Tom Gaglardi, who has already made his mark on the team since buying them back in November 2011. He has fired the coach and general manager he inherited from the previous regime (Glen Gulutzan and Joe Nieuwendyk), and is now changing the literal appearance of the franchise. Give Gaglardi credit for trying to change the culture around a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in five years, and is desperate for a spark.

Though the jerseys are safe for now, it is confirmed that they will feature green as the prominent color, much like the uniforms worn by the Dallas Stars that made it to two straight Cup Finals back in 1999 and 2000 (and who brought home Lord Stanley’s Cup in ’99).

  • They should’ve made the stars look like a cowboy’s spurs and given the Texan team a more Texan flavor (which, as a lifelong southern Californian, I really couldn’t care less about). They originally were the Minnesota North Stars, and while the team’s name was a nice fit for the Lone Star State, I’d have gone red, white, and blue — very patriotic; very state flag-ish.

I mean, it’s not like those crazy U of Maryland football uniforms, with their wild state flag’s symbols and all . . . .

  • Branding is key to impressions but content is “KING”. Put a quality product on the ice and the logo and merchandise sales will flourish regardless of the design and/or colors. I like the new design but anything is better than the basic black with block lettering (some marketing genius must have put a lot of time in that design?).

Go sign a coach that knows how to gain the trust of the youngsters. Find a coach who knows how to build around what he has already in place and a coach who can be innovative and strategize but please do not reinvent the wheel again!!!

If you do this, the logo and colors will be wildly successful. Alas, if you don’t, the new owner (again) will be changing logos and colors once again.
