Oilers deal G Bryzgalov to Minnesota
The Edmonton Oilers have dealt goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to the Minnesota Wild, in exchange for a fourth-round draft choice in 2014. Minnesota was in the market for a goalie after Josh Harding’s entry into treatment for his multiple sclerosis, and after today’s news that Nicklas Backstrom will likely remain out for the rest of the year with an abdominal injury.
Bryzgalov joined Edmonton in late November, but lost his starting job to Ben Scrivens. After the Oilers acquired netminder Viktor Fasth from the Anaheim Ducks, Bryzgalov became expendable. Darcy Kuemper will likely remain the starting goalie in Minnesota, but the Wild now have capable depth behind him in Bryzgalov, a veteran of 445 NHL contests.
