The Boston Bruins went into last Sunday’s NHL Draft trying to trade forward Tyler Seguin in order to get back into the first round. They failed in their pursuits, but have now found a willing partner.

According to Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News, in a blockbuster, multi-player deal, the Bruins have sent Seguin, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 Draft, to the Dallas Stars along with center Rich Peverley and defenseman Ryan Button in exchange for winger Loui Eriksson, forward prospects Matt Fraser and Reilly Smith, and top defensive prospect Joe Morrow.

The trade accomplishes goals for both teams. Boston was heading into free agency looking for an upgrade or two at right wing; they got that with Eriksson, a 2011 All-Star and one of the Stars’ most consistent point producers from the last five years. Dallas wanted a top-line center, and presumably got one in Seguin, a natural centerman who was playing out of position at right wing on Boston’s third line this past season for the Bruins.

Here’s the rest of the players involved in the deal:

Joe Morrow, D: 2011 first-round pick (Pittsburgh). Acquired by Dallas in exchange for Brendan Morrow. Top defensive prospect who projects as a good offensive-defenseman with a booming shot.

Matt Fraser, LW: Good AHL goal scorer (Texas Stars’ all-time leader in that category), but never made much impact in limited NHL action (one goal in 13 NHL games).

Reilly Smith, RW: 2009 third-round pick (Dallas). Developing winger who notched nine points (three goals, six assists) in 37 games this past season.

Rich Peverley, C: 30-year-old seven-year NHL veteran who has played for the Predators (2006-’09), Thrashers (’09-’11) and Bruins (’11-’13). Middle-six center type whose best season was in 2010 with the Thrashers (22 goals, 33 assists, 55 points).

Ryan Button, D: 2009 third-round pick (Boston); has spent the past two years in the AHL and ECHL, and is unlikely to see significant (if any) NHL time.
