Top 10 NHL players who need to step up in 2013-14
10. Ryan Miller, G, Buffalo Sabres
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Ryan Miller, Vezina Trophy winner in 2008 as the NHL’s best goalie, has suffered a steady decline in play the past few seasons. As a result, the Sabres have missed the playoffs each of the last three years. Yahoo Sports recently ranked Miller as only the 16th best goaltender in the league. If Miller wants to get back to helping the Sabres, he needs to elevate his play- but not for the reasons you might think. See, Miller needs to play well enough, but not to get the Sabres back into the playoffs- but so that he becomes an attractive trade option. Buffalo is rebuilding, and needs to deal their once-franchise goaltender for a few picks and/or prospects before he walks as a free agent at the end of the year. If Miller can get back to being even half the goalie he was in 2008, he could be dealt to a contending team in need of a goalie. Philadelphia’s an option; so is Pittsburgh if Marc-Andre Fleury continues his erratic play. Dark horse candidate: Edmonton, if they can get all that young talent to finally gel.
