While the Oilers wait on newly acquired goalie Viktor Fasth, University of Calgary goaltender, and Canadian gold medal winner Shannon Szabados is on the ice during Oilers practice.

After general manager Craig MacTavish traded Illya Bryzgalov to the Minnesota Wild, Craig Mac needed to fill the void left to back up Ben Scrivens should Scrivens not perform well or get injured against the Ottawa Senators. After a massive Twitter campaign to get the Edmonton native and Gold medal winner to be the emergency backup, it was decided that University of Alberta Golden Bear Kurtis Mucha would serve as backup. But that doesn’t mean that MacTavish wasn’t aware of the campaign; in fact he praised the idea.

“it would be something that we’d consider but not at this point in time.”

For Szabados to just be on the ice in an Edmonton uniform is a dream come true for her. Could it lead to another female goaltender in the NHL? Possibly, but for right now let’s just go ahead and appreciate the Edmonton Oilers and Craig MacTavish for making a young woman’s dream come true.
