As if Curtis Granderson needed anything more on his resume of being known as one of the “good guys” of baseball, he padded it anyway.  Probably doesn’t even care if he gets publicity.  The New York Yankees outfielder donated $5M to the University of Illinois – Chicago to upgrade their stadium, according to Chicago Business Sports blogger Danny Ecker.

A native of Lynwood in the southern suburbs of Chicago, Granderson played three years at UIC (2000-2002), finishing his senior season batting .483 (2nd in the nation) and being named Horizon League Player of the Year.  He wasn’t just a baseball player awaiting the draft, as according to UIC, he double majored in business marketing and business administration.  He’s obviously realized that giving back is part of the responsibility of those blessed with business income.

Granderson’s donation is the lion’s share of the $7M needed and the stadium will bear the 3-time all star’s name.  As part of the upgrade, the stadium will add capacity to over 1000 and be used for Chicago Public Schools and various youth programs.  Granderson is also the founder of Grand Kids Foundation, which according to the website:

Donations to the Grand Kids Foundation will go towards grants to schools nationwide to help fund educational field trips, art initiatives, science initiatives and the increasing need for foreign language software. The foundation also supports inner city baseball programs through equipment donations.

It’s great to see an athlete “get it” and give back to those in need and had a role in getting him where he is today.
