Jason Vargas to Sign with the Royals 99

In a rather shocking free agency turn, the Kansas City Royals have inked LHP Jason Vargas to a 4-year $32 Million deal.  This deal led to a predictable twitter meltdown from the World’s Biggest Royals Fan, Rany Jazayerli.

While, Jazayerli certainly isn’t the only one who is shocked, he is certainly one prominent example. Vargas has been a decent LHP over the past few years, compiling a career 51-58 record with a 4.30 ERA. With this kind of a deal, Royals RHP, Ervin Santana may yet get his $100 million deal.

Vargas had an ok 2013, in an injury shortened season he went 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA, while striking out 109 batters. His best season was in 2012 in Seattle when he was a 3.1 WAR player and he compiled a 14-11 record with a 3.85 ERA. If he could put numbers like that up for the Royals, then there may be a lot of value.

Some may argue that the Royals could have and should have signed veteran soft-tossing lefty, Bruce Chen, for a cheaper price. Chen has spent the last five years in Kansas City.
