Two-time reigning American League MVP Detroit Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera has told the Detroit Tigers that he’d rather play 1B rather than 3B in 2014. Mike Axisa of CBS Eye on Baseball and Brian Manzullo of the Detroit Free Press reported a tweet from Cabrera’s native Venezuelan baseball reporter Manolo Hernandez:

With the trade of 1B Prince Fielder, the Tigers are undergoing a remodel of a team that reached the 2012 World Series, and the 2013 American League Championship Series. But the mode of operation is still to win now as Ian Kinsler certainly brings additional offense to their middle infield. It makes sense to move Cabrera, who isn’t known for strong defense (but is probably better than he gets credit for). Also, especially in 2013, Cabrera was breaking down physically by the end of the season and relieving him of the physical duties on the hot corner would most definitely benefit his offensive production.
The final driver will probably be what other free agent moves Tigers GM Dave Dombroski is able to pull off. There are a few key 1B free agents on the market that would fit nicely into the middle of the Tigers lineup. Not as many available at 3B. There is also 4-time All-Star c/1B/DH Victor Martinez who needs a place to play from time-to-time.
There are a lot of puzzle pieces left to fit into the 2014 Detroit Tigers puzzle, Cabrera has expressed his desire, but at the end of the day, he’ll do what it takes to finally win a World Series in the Motor City.
