Rick Ankiel resurfaces with Houston Astros 52

The Houston Astros have invited Rick Ankiel to their camp in Kissimmee, Florida, and a non-roster invitee.  This might be a huge break for Ankiel, who will be competing for a job on a team that has been the worst in baseball for two straight years and have positions open for audition.  To wit, only 3 players had more than 10 HR on last years’ Astros “nunnery row” and Jed Lowrie at .244 had the highest average among the three.

To answer your first question, he will be trying out as a hitter.  To answer your second question, he is only 33 years old.  To answer your third question, there is no doubt if he lights the first half on fire (let’s just say .280+ and 15 homers by August 1), he will be traded.

Back to Ankiel, he’s probably running out of opportunity here, I imagine that if you can’t make the Astros, you’re probably not going to have a lot of other bidders swooping in.  Credit to him for sticking it out, especially after his somewhat successful, but implosive pitching career.  And here’s hoping he has some success!
