Davis and Harper provide some monster shots, Cespedes takes Home Run Derby

The 2013 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby came and left in a hurry, probably about as fast as a ball off of Bryce Harper’s bat. With this year’s derby we witnessed one of the greatest Home Run Derby performances ever and a few new guys that crashed the party. When it was all said and done, Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics took the cake. He won it with 5 outs left in the final round over Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper.

Cespedes erupted for 17 first round home runs while area derby contestants Bryce Harper and Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis had 8 a piece, just one ahead of fellow second round contestant Michael Cuddyer (Colorado Rockies). Rounding out the final four spots in the first round of the derby were Pittsburgh Pirates’ Pedro Alvarez with 6, Detroit Tigers’ Prince Fielder with 5, New York Mets’ David Wright with 5 and New York Yankees’ Robinson Cano with 4.

The second round didn’t see nearly as many home runs as Chris Davis hit 4, Michael Cuddyer hit 8, Brycer Harper hit 8 and Yoenis Cespedes hit 6. Cespedes didn’t even need to bat in order to advance but ensured that the AL would win the team battle over the NL.

In the finals Harper led off with 8 home runs, but was no match for the way Cespedes was hitting the ball. Cespedes hit 9 home runs using only 5 of his 10 outs to take this year’s Home Run Derby crown. I do not believe you have seen the last of Bryce Harper, he is the second youngest to ever compete in the Home Run Derby (Ken Griffey Jr was 42 days younger) at 20 years old. He also has a certain fire in his eyes with competition and will surely be back next year to win it.  I fully expect Chris Davis to come back and compete against both Harper and Cespedes.
