After Wednesday’s 4-3 win at Miami, the Nationals were happy to get a win. At the same time, some of the Washington players acknowledged the Marlins’ ongoing improvement.

Washington shortstop Ian Desmond was one of several Nationals’ players who spoke admiringly about their Florida opponents:

“That’s a good team over there…in the dugout going out for the bottom of the ninth we were telling each other, ‘Hey, we’ve got to focus and finish this thing out.’ For a while we’ve seen the Marlins getting better. This series was evidence of that. That bottom of the ninth was evidence of that.” (Associated Press)

The Braves have been a solid contender for years. The Marlins, with players like right fielder Giancarlo Stanton & a group of hard-throwing pitchers, are making noise like a team on the rise. The National League East may be much more than a two-team race the next few years.
