Orioles and Nelson Cruz show mutual interest in an extension
As the regular season winds down, both the Orioles and Nelson Cruz are expressing interest in extending the slugger’s tenure in Baltimore. In February, Cruz signed a one-year, $8-million contract that has been lauded as one of the best bargains in baseball. The Oriole is leading the league in home runs and has also driven in 88 runs to lead the team.
While the news only marks an initial step towards an agreement, the two sides will have plenty of time to work out potential numbers. Cruz will turn 35 next July, which may limit the amount of years any team is willing to commit to. However, Nelson Cruz’s 2014 power and production are likely to produce a hefty raise. The O’s will probably need to offer a generous, multi-year contract to further secure his services.
