Baltimore Orioles center fielder and star slugger Adam Jones (not to be confused with Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones) was the victim of a racial incident today, according to a USA Today article, at AT&T Field when a San Francisco Giants fan threw a banana at the center fielder during the O’s 10-2 win.

Jones took to Twitter and had this to say:

Despite no video evidence, who’s going to dispute this? If Adam Jones says this happened, this happened.

This is not the first time a banana has been thrown at an African-American sports figure in the past few years. In 2011, Philadelphia Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds was attempting a shoot-out in an exhibition game against the Toronto Maple Leafs when a fan impeded his progress by tossing a banana peel in his skating lane. The fan was later arrested and

later charged with engaging of a prohibited activity on a premises under the trespass to property act.

I know what you’re thinking; you’re thinking, “hey the guy was a drunk who wasn’t thinking about what he was doing. Who cares?” Who cares?!?! The fact that some idiot would do this, much less think about doing this, is horrid. As a fan of a team that is losing, lose with the team! Take your team’s loss like a man and accept the fact that your team was not supposed to win. The Giants, who sport the worst record in the NL West, have been doing a lot of losing this season. But that’s no excuse for you, whoever you were, to throw a banana at an African American player who’s going out there day after day, game after game, playing the sport that he loves, enjoying America’s past time, and most importantly, making a living for his family!

With all the racial issues that have happened in sports recently (including Riley Cooper’s racial slur) it’s time for the Comish to step out of his office and do something. Stop worrying about the steroids and the HGH and Albert Pujols wanting to sue some radio guy for telling St. Louis that he juiced because some guy told him he did and now Albert is going to sue (but I digress). The point is something has to be done about this fan, whoever you are. Major League Baseball and the sport of baseball itself has had it’s name dragged through the mud for the past decade. Please Bud Selig don’t let this idiot drag it any deeper!
