REPORT: Yankees trade Matt Thorton to Nationals
The Washington Nationals put in a waiver claim for left handed pitcher, Matt Thorton, and the New York Yankees agreed to send him to DC. By trading Thorton, the Yankees will save more than $4 million.
The Nationals have had some bullpen struggles of late and haven’t had a solid left handed reliever all season. Jerry Blevins and Ross Detwiler have been the lefties out of the pen for Washington this season and both have struggled. Thorton currently sports a 2.55 ERA in 24.2 innings pitched (46 appearances) with a 20:6 strikeout to walk ratio.
The 37 year old south paw will likely bring some much needed relief to the Nationals some what taxed bullpen. It is unsure at this time what move will be made to make room for Thorton on the roster. It is also unclear if the Yankees received any sort of compensation for Thorton in the deal.
