According to NFL.com, Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is the #1 rated backup in the NFL. Cousins played in only parts of 3 games and in one full game (as the starter) in 2012 for the Washington Redskins. In this short playing time Cousins led the Redskin  to a comeback win versus the Baltimore Ravens, started the following game at Cleveland and led the team to a blowout victory and had to iffy outings against the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks.

Ironically, the number two rated backup quarterback on this list is Washington Redskins rival, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Kyle Orton. Several former Washington Redskins quarterbacks also rank on the list with Kansas City Chiefs backup Chase Daniel at 4 and Cleveland Browns backup Jason Campbell at 15.

Within the NFC East, the rankings go Cousins and Orton (first and second), Nick Foles of the Philadelphia Eagles (projected backup)at number 6 and New York Giants backup David Carr down on the list at number 21. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyrod Taylor ranks in at number 16 on this list.

In the end, the Washington Redskins should have no worries if Robert Griffin III is not ready to start week 1 this season. Cousins has shown poise in the pocket and always seems to make the right decision. Cousins also has some wheels and can make the read-option work along with the play action fake and roll out. Cousins has caught the eyes of many and will not be a backup for many seasons in this league.
