Alex Ovechkin plays in charity game to raise money for orphanages
Over the weekend, Alex Ovechkin and other Russian hockey players participated in Ilya Kovalchuk‘s annual charity hockey game. The game raised 16 million rubles, which is about 500 thousand dollars, and the proceeds raised went to various orphanages around Russia.
The two teams were captained by Ilya Kovalchuck and Penguins center Evgeni Malkin. Just like Russia’s Olympic team, Ovechkin and Malkin were teammates in this charity match. The teams included former NHL players Alex Radulov, Alexi Yashin, and Nikolay Zherdev. The charity game also included Russian political figures Arkady and Boris Rotenberg and Gennady Timchenko, all of whom are sanctioned by the United States for Russia’s role in Ukraine. All in all the game ended in a 17-17 tie.
