Can Mikhail Grabovski become one of the best centers in the NHL?
It is pretty evident that the Washington Capitals’ organization had extremely high expectations from Mikhail Grabovski this season. But after last night’s performance, could the man they call “Grabs” become one of the best centers in the entire league?
After last night’s 6-4 loss to the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, Grabovski had a hat-trick (with two of the three goals originally credited to Mike Green). What’s most amazing about Grabs’ night is that after only 45 minutes of play, Grabovski had already scored a quarter of the goals that he had last season.
The 29 year old native of the former East Germany (despite being Belarusian) who was paired with Marcus Johansson and Troy Brouwer on the second line (originally Brooks Laich’s spot) registered 9 goals, 7 assists, and a +/- of -10. in a lockout-shortened season. Last night registered a lot of first for Grabovski: First NHL Hat Trick, first game in a Capitals uniform and first opening night hat trick in Washington Capitals history.
Despite being very optimistic, is this offensive-minded Washington Capitals’ team what Grabovski needs in order to have a break out season? And is this first game the marking point for a star that is about to explode into the league? Is this the beginning of a match made in heaven for both the team and Grabovski himself?
