Capitals add Matt Niskanen to blue line for 7 years
The Washington Capitals kept at their big spending pace as the afternoon turned to evening and they nabbed possibly the biggest defeseman in free agency with Matt Niskanen. This is the second Pittsburgh Penguins blue liner that they signed today (Brooks Orpik).

Coach Barry Trotz and G.M. Brian MacLellan noted that they wanted to add defense and they have done so in a big way. With this additon, the Capitals blue line will likely have the looks of Niskanen and Mike Green, John Carlson and Karl Alzner, Orpik and Dmitry Orlov.
If it wasn’t enough to just signing these big named, talented defesemen, they are also taking them away from division rival Pittsburgh. Helping your own cause while hurting a division opponent is always a plus. Let’s just hope that Niskanen isn’t another player who gets paid and forgets that he is supposed to play!
