July 1st marks 99 days till Opening Day of the 2014-2015 NHL Season, and the Washington Capitals have made a pretty big splash adding former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik, officially reuniting him with new assistant head coach Todd Reirden. Orpik inked a 5 year/$27.5 million deal.

A native of San Francisco, California, Orpik was selected by the Penguins 18th overall in the first round out of Boston College. After spending time with the Penguins affiliate in Wilkes-Barre, Orpik became a staple for the Pens during the ’03-04 season. A Stanley Cup champion with Pittsburgh in 2009, and a Silver Medal winner in the 2010 Winter Olympics with Team USA, Orpik will bring a defensive presence that has been lacking the last two seasons. Orpik finished last season with 13 points (2 goals, 11 assists) and 46 penalty minutes, and was on the receiving end of Shawn Thornton’s slew footing incident.
