Ovechkin celebrates 28th birthday with…broken glass?
Baltimore Arena (formerly 1st Mariner Arena) has been home to some memorable sporting events in it’s 51 year history including some memorable home games from the American Hockey League’s Baltimore Skipjacks who did battle with the Hershey Bears back in the 80’s (and still do today as the Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins) but few moments will rival what Alex Ovechkin did during the Baltimore Hockey Classic when the Washington Capitals took on the Boston Bruins.
With under five minutes remaining in the second period, Ovechkin and Boston defenseman Chris Castro battled for a loose puck in the corner when all of a sudden the glass behind Ovechkin seemingly fell out of place and broke behind the boards, causing a stoppage of play with 4 minutes to go in the period. This of course is not the first pane of glass that has felt Ovechkin’s wrath as he broke a pane with his head during the Lockout last season with Dynamo Moscow of the KHL.
You have to wonder did Ovechkin wish for super-human strength when he blew out the 28 candles on his cake today? Needless to say the crew at the Arena did a fine job of cleaning the mess in a speedy manor. The Capitals, who had won their past two preseason games via shootout, got a taste of their own medicine tonight and it was hard to swallow, losing this time in a cruel twist of fate, via the shootout. Carter Camper scored the game winner for the visiting Bruins.
