Ovechkin gets his milestone 400th goal

3,064 days after getting drafted #1 overall at PNC Arena all the way back in 2004, Alexander Ovechkin, otherwise known as the “Great 8,” has scored his 400th career goal at the same arena,  scoring an empty-net goal against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.

Ovechkin scored his 4ooth in his 634th career game, making him one of the 89 players in the league to ever score 400 and the sixth fastest to do so.  Only Wayne Gretzky (436), Mike Bossy (506), Mario Lemieux (508), Brett Hull (520) and Jari Kurri (608) accomplished this feat in fewer games, making Ovechkin one of the top goal scorers in the league’s history. With this goal, Ovechkin has also racked up the 3rd most shots on goals in the NHL ever since the beginning of the 1998-1999 season.

But, Alex does in fact know how big of accomplishment this is, saying, “It’s big number and being in this kind of company it’s a tremendous honor for me. I never felt like I’m going to be in this position when I start playing in NHL, of course I wanted to be but thanks to everybody my coaches, my partners. Without them I can’t reach these numbers.”

Since Adam Oates moved Ovi to right wing at the start of the shortened 2012-13 season, Ovechkin has scored 61 goals in 81 regular season games. With those numbers, he has also established himself as one of the most prolific goal scorers in the entire NHL.

Whether or not he will get 50 in his first 50 games is up to him, but he already has 29 in 33.
