Capitals buy out defenseman Jeff Schultz
It was a long time coming for Washington Capitals defenseman Jeff Schultz, but against general manager George McPhee’s personal preferences Schultz is about to be bought out of his contract. According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie:
WSH puts Jeff Schultz on unconditional ($100) waivers for purposes of buyout. Ditto for NYI and Rick DiPietro.

Jeff Schultz only played 26 games with the Capitals this season and only tallied 3 assists and a -6 rating. Schultz fell out of favor with Adam Oates and the coaching staff and didn’t play a game after March 31st. This move will help the Capitals save $2.75 million under the cap this year. With this cap space, the team can most likely re-sign forward Marcus Johansson and defenseman Karl Alzner.
