“Redskins” name dropped from MMQB site

Robert Klemko, a journalist for Monday Morning Quarterback, a Sports Illustrated website, announced today that the site has dropped the use of the word “Redskins” to refer to the NFL team in any of their writing.

Although Klemko didn’t have much to discuss about the topic, he did briefly talk with CBS Sports Radio today:

“I know that our site, we’ve talked about it, and we’re not going to use Redskins in our writing.” He continued to say,”we’re going to say ‘Washington football team.’ And it’s not something we’re going to publicize or write about. We’re just not going to do it.”

The real question that people are now wondering is whether or not Sports Illustrated follows in the footsteps of MMQB and drops the Redskins name from their vocabulary. MMQB is a site revolved around Peter King, the longtime Sports Illustrated “fixture” with his long list of NFL credibility. King later told The Big Lead that “no final decision has been made.” As of now, the Redskins name still graces the MMQB site.

Although there is probably a good reasoning why MMQB is not using the Redskins name anymore, it comes as a slap in the face to the Redskins ownership and fans. There is speculation that it is because the indian mascot comes off as “racist” and “disrespectful” to the Native Americans, it seems quite weird that a team that has been around since 1932 is just now being noticed for their name and mascot.

Washington Redskins’ owner, Daniel Snyder, recently told  USA Today that “we’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER-you can use caps.”

Despite what the Redskins’ management has to say, there is always going to be people that are against the use of the name “Redskins.” Whether or not the name gets changed in the future, King and his crew at MMQB have made the first step to ending a culturally insensitive topic regarding sports teams names and mascots.

What do you think about the Redskins’ name? Is the dropping of the name going too far?
