Wizards hire Kevin Durant’s high school assistant coach

Washington Wizards head coach Randy Wittman has filled the coaching vacancy left by the departure of Ryan Saunders with Kevin Durant’s old high school assistant coach, David Adkins. He will be the player development assistant coach.

Adkins previously worked for Maryland’s women’s basketball team, which is an unusual job for a coach coming into the NBA. But his job before that is even more interesting.

Per PBT:

Adkins was an assistant at Montrose Christian when Kevin Durant attended the high school. Adkins has also worked at DeMatha Catholic, a private school in nearby Prince George’s County, where Durant grew up. Not only does Adkins know Durant, he surely has ties to others close to the Thunder star.

Will this lead to Durant giving the Wizards a realistic look when he becomes a free agent in 2016? Who knows. But we have seen scenarios before where coaches help lure players to teams, so maybe this is a ploy to bring KD to Washington.
