Deion Sanders loves him some Tyrann Mathieu
One of the most interesting prospects at this year’s Scouting Combine was former LSU defensive back/return specialist Tyrann Mathieu. The former Heisman Trophy candidate has been away from football for a year following his expulsion from the LSU Tigers team for repeatedly failing drug tests. Mathieu drew a lot of interest from teams, who wanted to see if Mathieu had used his time off to get better as a player and a person.
Suffice it to say, Mathieu left the combine with at least one fan: former All-Pro cornerback and kick returner Deion Sanders, who positively gushed about Mathieu:
Among Sanders’ more memorable quotes was his description of Mathieu as “a straight up dog. You know what I mean. Man’s best friend. He’s a(n) overachiever. He’s all that and a bag of chips.” He went on to say that Mathieu “will be a baller”, indicating Sanders’ belief in Mathieu’s ability to become an impact player in the NFL.
Of course, it remains to be seen if NFL teams share Sanders’ enthusiasm. Mathieu had a good combine, running a solid 40 (4.5 unofficial) while looking fluid in drills. But is it enough for teams to allay their concerns about Mathieu’s character enough to use a draft pick on him? We’ll know in two months time.
