Dirk Nowitzki wants Carmelo Anthony on the Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks arguably gave the 2014 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs their biggest competition during the postseason. Despite getting blown out in Game 7, the Mavs pushed the Spurs to the brink of elimination which cannot be said for any of the other teams that were in the Spurs’ path. Could the Mavs have beat the Spurs if they had scoring machine Carmelo Anthony? Although Dirk Nowitzki hasn’t made that bold claim, he has endorsed the idea of having Anthony join the Mavericks this summer. And seeing that Dallas can create $31 million worth of cap space, Melo to the Mavs could certainly happen.
Via CBS DFW:
The Dallas Mavericks can create $31 million of cap space come July 1, and already committed to being a “get” in Summer Shopping is Dirk Nowitzki.
“If Carmelo would really love to come here,” Dirk says, “we’d love to have him.”
Nowitzki, speaking to “Ben & Skin” on 105.3 The Fan, obviously has some awareness of reports that ‘Melo might opt-out of his deal with the Knicks to explore free agency, and that Dallas might be on his wishlist.
But Dirk clearly has no doubts about a Nowitzki/Anthony “fit.”
There could be questions of how Anthony could fit with the Mavericks seeing how Dirk plays the power forward position and operates many times out of the high post. Anthony loves the high and low post and is notorious for his isolation type play. In addition, Anthony has been at his best when he’s playing the four-spot – the same position Nowitzki plays. Questions about spacing and sharing the ball could derail the Mavericks with guard Monta Ellis also being known as a ball stopper. However, if you can acquire a talent like Anthony, it’s hard to ignore his shortcomings and potential problems in a league where star power seems to get you to the Finals…and sell tickets.
