After six seasons in baseball’s minor leagues, Preston Mattingly, son of MLB legend Don Mattingly, has committed to playing basketball for Lamar University. In an interesting twist, Pat Knight, son of NCAA legend Bob Knight, is the coach there.
Via Fox Sports:
He played basketball at Evansville (Ind.) Central High, where he averaged 21 points as a senior. His former coach there contacted Knight, who offered Mattingly ascholarship.
”I was really glad he’s going to go back and get an education,” the elder Mattingly said Tuesday. ”Trying to get by today, you need an education. He’s going to get a chance to play while he’s doing it.”
It will be interesting to see how Preston Mattingly performs stepping back on the court at age 26. He never made it past Single-A ball in the minor leagues.
