After a workout with the team on Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers signed kicker Billy Cundiff. It’s 11th NFL team that Cundiff has been with since he started with the Dallas Cowboys in 2002.

The 49ers tried out Justin Medlock as well, but chose to sign Cundiff to compete with David Akers, who has been struggling all season long. In fact, Akers has made just 69 percent (29-of-42) of his field goals in 2012 — his lowest percentage of makes since he went 3-for-6 on field goals in 1999 with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cundiff’s role with the team is not fully understood at this point, and the 49ers will have an entire week to determine his role since they have a first-round bye in the playoffs. It is expected, however, that Cundiff will push Akers for his placekicking job. Cundiff was with the Washington Redskins earlier in the season, but was cut after making just 7 of his 12 field goals in his five games with the team.

  • payton, great quaterback, SUPERBOWL? YEA!

  • Brick-hand Sanders from the Steelers? Is Manning a receivers coach now? Manning was on his game. Weren’t the Chargers without their starting corners? Still played great. Broncos defense stuffing the Chargers running game was impressive. That 30 yarder floated in there nice. Is it me or does Peyton’s passes look like a 30 yard bomb? That crap won’t work in the playoffs when Ravens defenders are used to practicing against Flacco who throws 70-yarders.
