When Ben Tate was just a tot, he had big dreams and big goals. He wanted to be an NFL running back, and envisioned himself winning rushing titles and carrying the team on his back to the playoffs every year.

When he was drafted in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the running back needy Texans, his dream looked like it was about to become a reality. As fate would have it though, he ended up breaking his ankle in preseason that year, and all his  back up did with the opening was win the NFL rushing title and cement himself as one of the top running backs in the game.

Being the two in a 1-2 punch heavily featuring Arian Foster has been tough for Tate, and he says he isn’t satisfied with the complimentary role he’s been given.

“I would be lying to you if I told you that I embraced the complement role to someone else,” Tate told Ross Jones of FOXSports.com. “That’s not why I wanted to be in the NFL. That’s not my dream to complement someone else. That’s not what my attitude or why I work out is to complement someone else.”

Tate does seem adamant about claiming a starting role in the near future, though he did clarify that he holds no negative feelings towards Arian Foster.

“I’m competitive and we compete in everything we do. That’s just the way it is. But at the end of the day I feel that we are both mature about the situation.”

Tate may soon gets his wish, as he is set to hit free agency after this season and will be one of the most sought after free agents due to his age, skill set, and production. His days as a Texan are likely numbered, but that’s not distracting him from his ultimate goal of winning games.

“I play for the team to win,” Tate said. “For the last three years, my whole career I always played hard and am always fighting to get extra yards. I don’t think about that at all. I think about whatever I can do to help the team win.”
