Briggs: On paper, Bears look like champions
As we previously reported today, Lance Briggs says he would not be upset and would understand if Matt Forte held out this season. Briggs has been making the radio rounds today and he had another interesting comment about the team today. When asked about the upcoming season, Briggs had some strong words for the team’s outlook.
“On paper, we look like a champion, but we have a lot of work to do before we can be called a champion,” Briggs said. “There were moves that were made in the offseason to bring in a lot of veteran (players). Of course, Brandon Marshall and Michael Bush just put us in a position where we’re able to transition that stuff onto the field to be a real contender.”
The Bears did add Michael Bush, Brandon Marshall and a strong draft with the likes of Shea McClellin and Alshon Jeffrey during the off-season. However, I do not think this is enough to consider them championship contenders. Unless the team can sign Matt Forte and have a consistent year from Jay Cutler, they are going to struggle to even win the NFC North. Couple that with the fact that they have to play the Packers and Lions two times each and it is hard to see how they will be championship contenders.
Chicago also has hard games against Dallas, Carolina, Houston and San Francisco to worry about in 2012. While I am not ready to predict the Chicago Bears’ 2012 record, I am sure they will not be championship contenders. Maybe Lance Briggs will prove me wrong, but I doubt it.
