Broncos Willis McGahee to miss 6-8 weeks

Bad news for the Broncos this morning as an MRI on Willis Mcgahee’s injured knee revealed he sustained a Torn MCL in their win over the San Diego Chargers according to Adam Schefter and Chris Mortenson at ESPN.

McGahee left the game in the second quarter and did not return to action.

McGahee was having a solid season for the re-surging Broncos as they sat atop the AFC West. He had 731 yards and four touchdowns on the year. McGahee has played a pivotal role in the Broncos offense as not only their bruising running back, but his smarts in pass protection have kept Peyton Manning one of the least-sacked QB’s in the league thus far.

His return would come at the latest in the second round of the 2012 playoffs, or the first game of the Broncos post-season if they can capitalize and grab a first or second seed in the Conference, claiming a first round bye.

Behind McGahee, it’s expected that Ronnie Hillman and Lance Ball will split carries as the one-two punch in Denver’s offense.

This is a minor injury compared to the gruesome injury he sustained at the collegiate level in 2003 while playing in the Fiesta Bowl, where it was unknown if he’d ever play football again.

He fought back from the Injury and was selected 23rd overall in 2004 by the Buffalo Bills and has been a factor every year in which he’s played.
