With the year-long suspension of Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon looming on the team, general manager Ray Farmer doesn’t appear to be hurt by it.

He says that he likes Gordon and praises him as a player, but says at the end of the day his suspension wouldn’t make a difference because big-time receivers don’t win Super Bowls.

When asked what Gordon’s potential suspension means for the team Farmer said “I would say ‘how important are those guys?”’ he said via the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Name the last big-time receiver to win a Super Bowl. Name the last mega-guy. Gordon matters to me because I like the guy and I think he’s a really good player, but at the end of the day, when you look at the teams that have these mega-receivers, name the last guy that won a Super Bowl?… There are none. The last guy that really helped his team get there was T.O.”

While having a game changing receiver definitely increases your chances of winning games and making your offense dynamic – Farmer does have a point.

Aside from Terrell Owens, the last impactful mega receiver to help his team get to and win the Super Bowl was Jerry Rice in the 94-95 season. Michael Irvin helped the Cowboys the following year, but in the big game he was obsolete. In the Seahawks victory over the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII Percy Harvin was a difference maker in the return game, but didn’t do much in terms of receiving.

“The reality is that you put guys in there that can play roles,” Farmer continued. “If a guy is a mega-talent, you’re not just going to go out on the street and find another one. If a guy is not there, you’ve got to parcel it. You’ve got to take a guy that can take the top off, you’ve got to take a guy that can be a possession guy. You’ve got to take a guy that can play a variety of roles and then you hodgepodge it. You move guys around, you put them in different situations, you use a rotation.”

Right, but Miles Austin and Earl Bennett won’t be able to fill those roles. Nate Burleson may be the best receiver on that team should Gordon be handed the suspension – and that isn’t saying much for a young quarterback like Johnny Manziel.
