Cardinals Donate $100,000 to Fallen Firefighters Fund

By now, you have certainly heard the heart wrenching story of 19  firefighters that lost their lives fighting a blazing wildfire in Arizona. Nineteen of the 20 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots were killed fighting the blaze in Northern Arizona when they were trapped and killed by a windblown fire. This is the worst loss of life for an American fire department since Sept. 11, 2001. They died heroes and now an NFL team has come forward with a large donation to support the families of those lost.

The Arizona Cardinals have come forward with a donation of $100,000 to the “100 Club of Arizona”, which provides financial assistance to families of public safety officers (that includes firefighters) that are either wounded or killed while on duty.

“Our hearts go out to all of those affected by the devastating and tragic events this week, especially the families of the 19 brave members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who lost their lives serving our community,” Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said. “Our team is proud to assist the ongoing efforts and encourage our fans, the community and Arizona businesses to support these relief initiatives.”

On Monday, members of the Cardinals also visited the American Red Cross Shelter in Prescott, Ariz., to meet with those affected by the wildfire. The team also plans to announce more fundraising efforts closer to the start of training camp and the regular season.

“If you ever met them, you would meet the finest, most dedicated people,” Prescott, Arizona Fire Chief Dan Fraijo said of the 19 fallen firefighters. “They’ll sleep out there as they try to develop fire lines and put protection between homes and natural resources and still try to remain safe.”

Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of those lost.
