A case of déjà vu for Matt Flynn?

A year ago, Matt Flynn was given a big contract to be the new starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks.  He promptly lost the starting job to a certain rookie Russell Wilson.  Wilson had a great rookie campaign, leading the Seahawks back to the playoffs and making the Pro Bowl along the way.

After the Seahawks decided to trade him to the Oakland Raiders for a 2014 fifth round pick and a conditional pick in 2015 earlier in the off-season, Matt Flynn is facing the prospect of losing his starting job for the second time in twelve months.

After completing just three passes on six attempts for 19 yards and two interceptions and being down 27-0 against the Chicago Bears in the Week Three preseason match up, Flynn was pulled in favor of Terrelle Pryor.

Terrelle Pryor was the final pick made by the great Al Davis.  He was chosen in the third round of the 2010 supplement draft after escaping a heavy NCAA suspension for his role in the Ohio State “tattoos for jerseys” scandal.

Considered a work in progress, he was never given the opportunity to start until Carson Palmer was traded to the Arizona Cardinals.  Raiders head coach Dennis Allen then announced an open quarterback competition to find his starter for the 2013 season.  Pryor would battle with Flynn and 2013 fourth round draft pick, Tyler Wilson.

During the game against the Bears, Pryor sparked some life into the Raiders offense, making plays with his feet as well as his arm.  He completed seven passes on nine attempts for 93 yards and one touchdown.  He also ran four times for 37 yards and a touchdown.

Third games of the preseason are usually the final dress rehearsal for the regular season where the starters play the most snaps.  It doesn’t bode well for Flynn that he hasn’t managed to lock down the starting job by now.

What does it mean for Flynn if he fails to win the job?  Simply put, it would mean he’s not the quarterback he was hyped up to be when hitting free agency in 2012.  He would be an expensive back-up that no team would really be willing to trade for to be their starter unless he was guaranteed the starting job.

It is going to be interesting to see how Matt Flynn copes in the final preseason game.  Another performance like he had against the Bears, and the job could end up going to Pryor by default.
