Charlie Batch: Can we develop Landry Jones to be the starter?
The Pittsburgh Steelers had an excellent 2013 NFL Draft. Three of their picks, LB Jarvis Jones, RB LeVeon Bell, and WR Markus Wheaton will be expected to come right in and produce, at least situationally. In the fourth round, the Steelers selected QB Landry Jones. Jones was highly regarded after his 2011 season at Oklahoma, then had a down 2012 season. Well it is obvious Ben Roethlisberger still has at least four good seasons left, Charlie Batch thinks the Steelers may have selected Landry Jones for more than just depth:
“Utimately, I think this isn’t about replacing me,” Batch told Ron Cook of thePittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Big picture, maybe they’re thinking, ‘Can we develop Landry Jones to be the starter? Maybe two years from now, he could be our guy for the next 10 years.’ We don’t know. But with the contracts for quarterbacks these days, he’d certainly be a heck of a lot cheaper than Ben at age 34 or 35 or 36.”
Being a Steelers fan, I think Landry Jones was a good pick. It’s never too early to start seeing who could be the heir apparent to Big Ben, although they won’t move on from him for quite some time and will look to replace him with someone who is just as good. Also, Jones gives the Steelers depth should Roethlisberger suffer another unfortunate injury in 2013.
