DeMarcus Ware backtracks on “Put up or shut up” to Romo; Says it was meant for team

A few weeks ago after Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo signed his monstrous six-year $108 Million deal, Cowboys defensive stud DeMarcus Ware appeared on Sirius XM NFL Radio telling Romo it was time to “Put up or shut up.”

Now, a few weeks later, Ware says his comments were twisted, and he meant it for the entire team.

“They’re going to twist the words that you can change,” Ware said, via Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News. “So I talked to Romo about that. It didn’t come across as it was personified as. I tell them when it’s time to play you put everything else behind you and put your best foot forward.”

To me, listening to the interview live as it was aired, it sounded pretty convincing that Ware was talking directly to Romo, but I digress.

He says it was meant for every man on the roster when the time comes.

“That’s everybody,” he said. “When you get out there it’s put up or shut up. It’s produce or don’t get on the field.”

Ware is one of the few in Dallas that can say that, he’s played through injury and has been a constant force on that team since his entry in 2005. He’s a perennial pro-bowler and a fierce leader on the team.

He’ll be moving positions as the defense switches from a 3-4 to a 4-3 under Monte Kiffin, and he’s getting ready for the transition – one he says won’t be too complicated.

“I think it’s going to be an easy transition,” he said. “It’s going to be really good for us.”

For the other 52 guys on the roster on opening day, it’s time to put up or shut up – and not just for Tony Romo.
