Dennis Allen: Matt Flynn’s our starter right now
After acquiring Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks this off-season, most believed Terrelle Pryor’s days as the Oakland Raiders starting quarterback were numbered. Then, the Oakland Raiders drafted Tyler Wilson out of Arkansas in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. With the early praise of Wilson, analysts wondered if Flynn would see any snaps as the team’s starting quarterback this year.
Then, yesterday Steve Corkran of the Bay Area News Group reported that people within the Raiders organization believe Wilson is a better quarterback than Flynn.
“Yeah, right now that’s the way we’re going. Just like we’ve said before, we want to try to create as much competition as we can on this football team,” Allen said, via the team’s website. “That’s how you get better. When everybody competes and they compete in a way that they want to do what’s best for the football team, the cream always rises to the top. So Matt is our starting quarterback as we go forward right now. Until the competition dictates otherwise, that’s the way we’re going.”
The Raiders need to decide if they are going to see what they have in Wilson or ride with Flynn for the season. The worst thing they can do is switch between the two throughout the season.
By the start of the season, the team must show confidence in one quarterback and stick with them.
