After finishing the 2013 NFL season tenth in points allowed per game and twenty-sixth in yards allowed per game, Patriots safety Devin McCourty believes the team’s defense did “great things” last year. On Tuesday, McCourty was asked whether or not the team’s defense could impact games like the Seahawks defense did this year. According to McCourty, in 2014, the Patriots defense can impact games just like the Seahawks did in 2013.

“I think we can,” McCourty said, via ESPNBoston.com. “Those guys had a great game plan and they went out there and executed it on the biggest stage of the year. That’s what it really comes down to in games like that. Just last year, we went through a lot defensively and as a team, and to see guys continue to work hard and try to get better and go out there to win as many games as we did — to fall a little short, but it gives you the confidence going forward we know we have the right guys to build something.”

The Patriots did lose Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo to season ending injuries prior to making the playoffs and staying healthy in 2014 could make them a top-10 defense. However, the Seahawks were a once in a decade type of defense this year. The Patriots defense wasn’t even close to Seattle’s this year and I doubt they will be in 2014. Yes, they should improve, but to think they will play like Seattle’s defense did in 2013 is crazy.
