Ever heard of a sports science coordinator in the NFL? Well, now you have.

To complete the Eagles’ coaching staff, head coach Chip Kelly hired Shaun Huls to be the team’s new sports science coordinator. How is Huls qualified for this job? It’s simple: he’s a former Navy SEALs trainer. Huls was the strength, conditioning and combatives coordinator for Navy Special Warfare, according to USA Today.

Kelly said back in January, the Eagles’ offense is going to be up-tempo, which could be a primary reason for bringing in another strength and conditioning coach. In fact, in January, after his hire, Kelly said he regularly wants the ball out of the quarterback’s hands in 1.5 seconds. That will most likely make the Eagles the quickest team offensively in the NFL, and if they Eagles are planning to keep that tempo and run no huddle, they’re going to need a lot of conditioning. We don’t know if the offense is going to be as quick as it was in Oregon, but it’s safe to assume it’s going to move at a quick pace, and that’s going to require some extra training.

Huls will work alongside new strength coach Josh Hingst starting with the voluntary offseason program that begins in April.

Huls and Hingst are two of 22 new hires on the Eagles’ staff that came along with the switch from Andy Reid to Kelly. Only two of Reid’s coaches remain on the staff: tight ends coach Ted Williams, who has been with the Eagles since 1995, and running backs coach Duce Staley.

Kelly and the Navy SEALs have had experience with each other before. In 2010, he told the New York Times about his admiration of military training, and in 2011, as coach of the Oregon Ducks, he tested his team in a day called “Judgement Day”, which was a program led by Navy SEALs.
