Over the last two seasons, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has been toying with the idea of expanding the league’s schedule to an 18-game season. Some analysts believe Goodell would drop two pre-season games in order to create a longer regular season. While Goodell has not done more than discuss the idea, newly elected players’ union president Eric Winston says an 18-game season will not happen on his watch.

“I can tell you 16 to 18′s dead in the water. I won’t let it happen. I don’t think any of these other guys are going to let it happen. It’s a safety issue,” Winston told USA Today.

Winston may be concerned that an 18-game season will be harder on players or cause more injuries throughout the league.

Under the new collective bargaining agreement signed in 2011, the NFL players have the right to reject any expansion to the regular season.
