While in the sixth grade, Atlanta Falcons guard Justin Blalock decided he wanted to play an instrument. Blalock had to decide which to play and originally wanted to play the drums.

“I really wanted to play the drums at first, but I was steered away from that, which I’m sure my parents were happy about,” Blalock said.

Blalock went on to choose to play the Tuba and joined the marching band. Blalock played the tuba in the marching band from sixth grade until eleventh grade when he decided to quit in order to focus on football.

“It was tough to play when I wasn’t in band anymore because you don’t really see tubas just lying around,” Blalock said.

Tonight, Blalock will have the chance to play his tuba again for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as they host a charity event for youth orchestras.

“Justin Blalock is a first-rate tuba player,” Atlanta Symphony Orchestra president Stanley Romanstein told Kevin Hageland of the Plano Star Courier.

Blalock admitted he has taken a few lessons recently in order to help with being nervous about tonight.

“There is definitely a sense of excitement, but I think I’m mostly nervous,” he said. “There are going to be a lot of really good musicians out there and I don’t want to mess this up.”

I am sure Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons are happy that Blalock chose football over the orchestra.

Still, tonight, Blalock will have a chance to relive his tuba playing past.
