Five Draft Day Options for the Houston Texans
The Houston Texans will have the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft on May 8th, 2014. This will be the third time in the franchise’s history that they will choose first. The previous times were in 2002 and 2006 while they selected David Carr and Mario Williams respectively. In those years they didn’t have many options because they were rebuilding. Now, they are just a few key pieces away from getting back to the playoffs. Here are five options that they have with their first round pick in this year’s draft.
Select Jadeveon Clowney
Mock drafts across the country have had Jadeveon Clowney going first overall since last year and the Texans would solidify their defensive front seven with another pass rusher. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has recently stated he hasn’t seen a defensive end grade this high since Bruce Smith. It will be hard to pass up on this machine of a man but some say he does have character issues.
Select Khalil Mack
If the Texans were to take Khalil Mack with their pick that would be two years in a row that MAC 10 players were taken first overall. Mack is a great overall player who can play 4-3 defensive end or 3-4 outside linebacker because of his athletic ability. If Houston passes on Clowney because of his character issues but still think they can get their quarterback (QB) in the second round, then look for Khalil to be the pick.
